What things matter most in your child’s life?

Kristen Ivy, the executive director of messaging at The reThink Group, commonly referred to as Orange has created a list for us below:

  • love
  • words
  • stories
  • fun
  • work
  • tribe

Well, I like to encourage some of these things during my outdoor family portrait shoots.  As a family photographer in Redding, CA I am lucky enough to get to meet new families on a regular basis.  During these portrait sessions, I try to make it as fun and meaningful for each family member.  I want my prints specially created for my clients hung beautifully in their home, to reflect the love they feel for one another.

Yes, I do take some of the old school traditional posed family portraits, with everyone looking at the camera.  But I do much prefer the real life interactions.  Interactions like, a husband nestling his nose near the nape of his wife’s neck as he squeezes her tight and whispers something quietly, making her squirm with delight.  Or when a mother grabs her little girl’s delicate hands, looking deeply into her daughter’s eyes and telling her daughter how much she truly loves her.  Through my lens, I can see the little girl bubble over with absolute pure joy in hearing these very important words.  As you browse my photographs, you might just notice what I am speaking of.

“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough – there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.” – Robert Frank

My photographic goal:

My goal is that my clients will look at their pictures and remember that embrace or those words.   As the photographer, I curate situations that would make myself, my husband or my children happy.  And give that gift to my clients as I photograph them in real time.  We are so lucky to live this life, I want to capture the meaning of “family.” Then encourage my client to have those special moments framed and hung throughout their home to look upon regularly, as I do.  I know when I look at my photography hung beautifully of my little girls through the years scattered around the house, I always smile and recall those moments.  How thankful I am to have these pictures of love surrounding me at all times.

Thank you Leaverton Family.

I have to thank The Leaverton Family for choosing me for their outdoor family portraits.  If I remember correctly, they had not had their pictures taken for quite some time.  Even though it looks like spring in these photographs, it was the middle of winter and super duper cold!  I actually noticed tonight as I was creating this blog post, their son, Lucas has goosebumps in one of the images, poor little man.  Michelle, you did such an amazing job with the colors of your clothing.  You were so sweet during our shoot and such a great subject for me to photograph. Dan, you killed it…always smiling and playing along with whatever craziness I requested. Chloe, oh my…such a darling little girl.  Loved how she liked to be center of attention for some of my portraits.  Willing subjects are always a favorite of mine, especially beauties like her.  Again, thank you for trusting in me to take your family portraits.

Is a family photo session for you?

Are you wanting to document moments like The Leaverton Family?

Seeing your child’s eyes light up with happiness.

Feeling your partner wrap around you, and physically feeling their love.

Witnessing your child explore the natural outdoor environment.

These are moments Jamie Solorio Photography of Redding, CA can curate and document for you.

This is a mega overshare and a late, late, late blog post. And I don’t really apologize…for all of the images anyhow.  Mainly because I have come to really adore this family over the years.  Their outdoor Fall portrait session produced so many fun images in our scenic Caldwell Park of Redding, California.  The Kohn’s have been so chill and easy going, thank goodness!  Our first session together, law enforcement was called out and the Kohn’s even asked me back again!  It is a silly story…Isa, my daughter was sick that day and I had called Liz in the morning to tell her.  I told her Isa could just relax on a blanket near us while I did the shoot.  Well, I guess someone thought my daughter was abandoned or who knows.  Though, I am thankful someone was thoughtful enough to call for her.  However, walking over to us and asking if she was okay…could of saved the time of the ambulance and police officer.  Did make the portrait session interesting though.

This year Liz wanted to try some fall leaves, and I have to say it was very tricky.  The reason I say this is because it was a super rainy winter.  We actually had to reschedule the family pictures a few times due to weather and maybe even sickness.  I am usually always up for rescheduling when conditions are not great, and especially if anyone is ill.  Family portraits are an investment, it takes time to coordinate outfits and not to mention financially.  However, we went for it one day…even though the grass was still a little wet.  So glad we went for it, they were absolute troopers!  The yellow leaves were all over the ground at the park and it couldn’t of been more perfect. As for color schemes, the yellow and orange leaves went perfectly with Liz’s blue toned clothing.  So, if you are looking for some family portrait clothing ideas, be sure to take a look at their pictures below.

Want to take a trip down memory lane with the Kohn family?  In the past we had done the meadow session I linked above, a gorgeous purple flower session in a meadow, a lifestyle newborn session, and a beach portrait session.

What I love about family portrait sessions like this, is the true joy that is seen across their happy little faces.  One of my recent ideas was to use bubbles as a family portrait session idea…not to mention, children love bubbles.  Another family photo idea I had was to have Rob twirl Avery around above me as I laid on the ground trying to capture her joy in her father’s hands.  A picture I need to take of my youngest before she gets to big with her daddy.  I hope that they treasure these images and look at them often.  Liz and Rob actually print their images and hang them on the walls…which is really something…now a days! lol.  More people need to print their digital images, even cell phone shots.  For example, I had several thousand images on my cell phone, and someone stole my phone out of my purse hanging on my shoulder one night in San Francisco.  Funny thing was, a few nights before I had literally spent like 3 hours looking through all the old images and thought to myself, “I really need to print these.”  Literally 2 days later, my phone was stolen along with a year worth of photographs.  Oh, and of course I had not listened to my wise husband and backed them up via Google photos.  So, moral of the story, be like The Kohn’s…be happy and please print your pictures.

Thank you so much Rob and Liz for letting me take your family portraits here in Redding, California.  Caldwell Park is now one of my favorite places to take pictures in Redding.  I always enjoy seeing how the kids have changed.  Seeing the way you guys enjoy your littles and each other, really is something special.

Oh, and then there was a little request from Avery…to take a portrait of her with her fancy umbrella at the end of the shoot. Done, and gotta say…love how darling this image below is.  She was really struggling with that cute umbrella and you can see it head to toe.

Thank you guys so very much for allowing me to come into your beautiful home and spend an evening together.  I decided to just show the indoor pictures for this blog post, we also have some outdoor images as well to show a bit later.  Chelsea, you should be an interior designer…perfection!

Enjoy your little man!

Thanks so much Ryan and Courtney!  As usual, I always enjoy my time with you guys.  Really, I think you both are very solid people and I am glad to call you both my friends.  I rarely shoot at Caldwell Park here in Redding, and so glad we did.  So happy with these images, really cute stuff!  Bubble fun, fun with a sheet, and you can’t forget some rough housing with the boys.  Thanks for being patient with me for some of the new shots, it is difficult I have to say after years of taking portraits of the same family…changing it up! Ha!

Enjoy your holidays and hope to see you both soon!

Thank you so much Mike and Dani for letting me take your family portraits this year.  Okay, lets start with styling, gorgeous Dani!  That dress…the fall colors, perfection!  Location, OMG…this meadow she took me to is simply amazing and the public is able to use it!  So, anybody who wants to shoot there, please let me know!  I would love to go out there again!  EVEN though Siri and I got so very lost deep in the forest down a dirt road for a good 15 mins!  HA!  So worth it though!  The color is even a bit different in the photos then the meadows in Redding, so nice for a little change for me.  I find the same thing happens in Mt. Shasta as well.

I have to say, taking portraits for another photographer is always a bit intimidating, but I made it through!  If you would like to check out Dani’s beautiful work, please check out her site Dani D Photography.  I actually send my sleepy baby newborns her way, plus a few other great photographers.

Such love in this family, I had a hard time culling down the images for the blog post, but below are a few of my favorites. Bubbles are now part of my kit, so don’t be surprised if you see lots of family portraits with bubbles for some time!  Kids just love them and makes them smile ear to ear…adults too.

Some of my favorite people!  Thank you guys for letting me take your family portraits!  Little Joseph is so adorable and such a boy!  Love this first image of Jonathan and him silhouetted against the blue sky.  Great job on color coordination and looking beautiful as always!  These images were taken over at the gorgeous gardens of Turtle Bay Arboretum…maybe my favorite place close to my home to shoot and visit. Enjoy every moment of little Joesph, they grow up wicked fast!

Thank you so much Amy and Jason for allowing me to take Tanner’s 2nd birthday portraits.  It was so fun getting to watch him explore Turtle Bay’s Arboretum, which is a magical place for a toddler.  Also, thank you for your kind words about the images, you guys really made my night.  Love this first image.  It is funny, because it is a very telling picture.  This is when I switched from my long lens and went to the 35mm.  35mm lenses means up close and personal, and his reaction was perfection.  Can’t blame him for taking a sneak peek through his teeny tiny fingers.  Enjoy this time with your son, they grow up so fast.

Thank you so much Michale, Jaye Jaye, Bishop and Carter for letting me take your portraits last week.  Really loved how the shoot was style along side the industrial look of Gerlinger Steel of Redding, CA.  I was sure to ask permission before shooting on Gerlinger’s property and was thankful when told I could, as long as no employees were working.  Our shoot happened to be on a Saturday, so we were in luck!

Also, thank you to my assistants for the day, Layne and Kya.  Kya was asked to created a little promo video, which I really loved.  Layne was out there in the heat reflecting, and scriming away.  It is nice to work with a team, makes it so much easier for me and better for my clients completed images.

Jaye Jaye, thank you for being so sweet and gotta say….those eyes!  Stunning!  Loved your Gucci sunglasses by the way, even though they covered those eyes!   That adorable black dainty dress that was paired perfectly with your Doc Martins…a girl after my heart! Love Love Love combat boots!  I have been wearing my Sutro boots for 3 years solid now and love the worn in feel!  Also, all of your boys are VERY handsome and made the shoot a lot of fun to capture.  The connection between you and your hubby is unreal.  Loved the way you both looked at one another.  I also loved that you both were down to play out the ‘slide down the body’ scene from Dirty Dancing!  Hope you enjoy your family pictures.

Thank you so much Garrett and Christine for allowing me to take your engagement portraits the other day, even thought it was crazy hot!  Within just a few minutes I was crazy sweating, I guess that is what happens in triple digits in Redding, CA. lol.  Anyhow, such love between the two of you, it was fun to capture!  Can’t wait to shoot your upcoming wedding!
